How do bees make honey?

When you see a bee crawl into a flower that’s when you know that they are collecting the nectar. They then return back to the hive and pass it onto the working bees.
These bees’ suck the nectar from the honey bees and chew the nectar for half an hour.  After a long time of chewing; they finally spit it out and into the honeycomb.
The nectar has now been created into thick syrup.  When the honey is gooey enough, the bees seal off the honeycomb with a plug of wax.
In one year the bees will eat up to120 – 200 pounds of nectar.

WOW that’s a lot of chewing!!

The Avengers writing group

Going for a walk
I hear the chirping sound of a cricket as I walk through the forest.
I feel the breeze pinching at my cheeks.
I taste the lemon from the leaves; it leaves a bitter feeling in my mouth.
I smell autumn coming from the moisture escaping from the dead leaves.
I see the sun rising up, flashing through the forest.

Autumn Leaves
I can hear the leaves crunching and screaming as I stomp on them.
My body is covered in goose bumps until the sun glares down on me.
I can taste the smell of fresh moss that’s growing on the trees.
I can see the ground covered in old brown leaves, it reminds me of my warm fuzzy blanket I just want to pull it over me.

The suns blanket of heat covers the forest and all that’s in it.
I hear the sweet sounds of the colourful birds in the slightly damp tree.
I taste the fresh water from the stream as the breeze brushes against my face.
I look to my left and I see a person, I get a fright as I think I am alone… it was just a shadow of a tree. Phewww!!!!

Autumn had just arrived
I see the leaves falling like raindrops on a stormy day.
I smell the most beautiful scent that no one could ever describe fresh plants…fresh everything.
I taste the mud as if it is in my mouth running down my throat.
I hear the wind rushing past my ear, it sounds like a tornado ripping past me.
I feel the sun as it beams down on me, breaking through the trees.
It makes me think that its summer again.

Pink Shirt Day 2014

PINK SHIRT DAY 2014
Yesterday we all wore something pink to show our support of anti-bullying.
Our school had King Homeboy perform at our assembly, he was awesome. His speech at bullying was really powerful and it made us aware of how our silly actions can really hurt people even if we don't mean it.
As you will see in some of the photos, Luiz won the poster competition for the year 7/8 section; we are all really proud of him.
Room 10 rocking the pink!!!!!!

What a character!

Wednesday 30th April 2014, the second week of our holidays and we had both been selected to attend a writing workshop, at Birkenhead Library. We were really excited because we were going to meet and work with well-known authors.
The two stunning ladies were Maria Gill and Victoria Azaro, we have many of their books in our class and in our school library.
The day was split in to two sessions. The first half of the day we got to work with Maria. She taught us how to introduce our writing to the reader and how to use good word selection to develop a characters personality, without needing illustrations.
We then had a break to have afternoon tea. After we were refreshed we quickly moved into our second session.
For the rest of the day we worked with Victoria. She taught us how to illustrate our writing. The main thing we worked on was expression. By changing a characters facial expression the reader can get a clear idea of how they are feeling.  This was Paris’ favourite part.
At the end of the workshop we were all presented with a certificate of participation, which we will keep and put in our High School applications.
The whole day was fantastic; we learnt so much that we were exhausted; on the drive home we both couldn’t resist closing our eyes.
We hope we get the opportunity to attend something like that again, as it has made our passion for writing even stronger.
